Hmm, maybe another incentive to team up with a dealer, aquire trade-ins during the summer, fix or part out in the winter (another viable side hussle for a youtube channel, I guess). Dunno, maybe over here it' s because of strict state inspections but there seems to be no seasonality to it besides folks wanting their car fixed for summer holidays. But then there's winter holidays also.

I don't know about that. A quick google says the average car age in the states is 12.5 years and in germany it's 10. I personally don't buy cars which are younger than 20 years but thats bc it's a hobby. The cost of repair hours just made a massive hike, now topping out around 180€/h + VA in the most expensive city. I have no idea where this is going, stuff just seems to become expensive. On the plus side, every shop I know is busy af. And I guess with more Electro and Hybrid, there's a bunch of work coming up which not everybody is willing to take.

Wes, for some odd reason today, I re-watched the video when you had them mud jack your shop floor, and you did the landscaping on the outside. You said something that I think was kinda prophetic, and I don't think you meant it to be. Paraphrasing, it was, "I don't know what the YouTube algorithm is going to do with a channel that goes from rebuilding the head of a milling machine to this, but, anyway....." You then said something about having a bunch of ideas for videos, but didn't know how you'd find the time for them. Well, I think you'll find a bunch of us weirdos enjoying the constant variety. Also, if you think about changing the patreon levels, I'd probably do more than $5/month. The enterainment value is there for me.

Best of luck, Wes. Even if it doesn't work out you won't regret it. Burnout isn't to be messed with. I've known a couple guys now that were incredibly hard working and had stamina like Boxer who woke up one day and could't get out of bed - for one it took six months before they could take a part time job, the other hasn't been able to hold down a job since then. No crystal ball to say if your stress would have metastasized like that but good that you're getting in front of it.

I feel you, funnily enough, I'm also at a position where I should start a company and I'm not doing it bc of the hassle. Maybe some kind of Partnership, like silent partner or a one off payment? Do you know diagnose dan? I don't know if he's employed or whatever but his setup seems pretty neat: He gets all the tricky cases from his shop (which is also a dealership and a bosch service) and other shops and brings in the customers via his channel. Dunno though if that would work out in the countryside, he is in a pretty densely populated area.

Oh, and that Model B with a cultivator is kicking up memories. Was some film strip back in Elementary School (possibly in IL--military folk move a lot). Johnny the farm boy was being lazy and inattentive, and did not pay attention to which field he was meant to go hoe with the tractor, so, he plowed the Model B into 5' tall corn--Johnny burst into tears and learns his lesson to listen carefully to his father and give up his skylarking & goldbricking ways. :)

As someone who started, then closed a small business, I have a ton of understanding on the issue. The child analogy is apt--but, it always felt more like an Animal Hospital to me--you had all these wonderful, unique, horrible, awful, glorious, magical [things] brought into your life, that you had to care fore like they were your own, then give them back/away to maybe never be seen again. The work was mute, but the owners were not (except when hugely important). It's a task. An all-day, every-day, task. I'm happy to have been able to see the small slice you have shared with us so far, and look forward whatever more comes our way.

I had a doctor do a similar thing. He became a concierge doctor where you paid him an annual fee to be your doctor and limited the number of clients. I was young enough at that time to not use his service.

Hopefully you can live off of the YT and Patreon proceeds. I would love to see more shop machine content as well. I've found Cutting Edge Engineering Australia to do some similar stuff that I'm enjoying.

Yes, bump a curb hard enough to cause your wheel to turn and it will definitely take out your hand. Had one in my first vehicle, a clapped out 1966 Chevy pickup. Made driving much easier.

Why not hire somebody or partner up? Your dad probably wants to retire someday, combined you got a bunch of customers, a solid reputation for decades and the reach/advertisement of that and the youtube channel.The amount of this "capital" is difficult to measure but I wouldn't just throw it away. I understand that it seems much easier to just let go of youtube or the business but I guess the smart choice would be to farm out the boring bruntwork to free up time for the interesting things. You don't have to split a tractor yourself to generate content, you just need a guy/gal who is comfortable with being timelapsed. See for example carwizard's channel. Also, there might be an opportunity to produce stuff in house and sell it to viewers, like Wes'es Gasket Laser Cutter. You need the business to "find" Problems you products can solve and the reach of a channel to sell them. See for example fireball tools. And last but not least: Maybe just shut the shop down for a month or so to catch a breather. I guess that's something pretty uncommon in the US but over here it's a pretty normal thing and everybody copes with it just fine.

My mechanic is the same way...great guy who does a top notch job but he's so overloaded with work that he's limited things to his existing customer base, no walk-ins, answering machine only when you call, everything needs an appointment. Maybe limit your shop to a specific group of customers so you have a manageable flow of jobs coming in?
