Sketching an OC ๐ŸŒผโœ๏ธ + steps & thought process! โœจ

Happy Monday everyone! ๐Ÿ’› I hope you guys are having a lovely start to your week โ˜บ๏ธ

Right now Iโ€™m sitting in a coffee shop doing some sketching and I wanted to show you guys what Iโ€™m working on! ๐Ÿ’Œ A while back I sketched a character design and I like her aesthetic, so I wanted to work on a more detailed version of her ๐Ÿฅฐ She likes to wear comfy baggy clothes and I imagine her having a shy personality โœจ

Iโ€™ve put the steps of the sketching process below so keep on reading for a little description of each step! ๐Ÿ’Œ

Loose Gesture: This part of the sketching process was all about capturing the rough essence of the character and playing with the pose in the composition. Itโ€™s a very vertical pose that runs down the center of the canvas pretty evenly, so I sketched her hair in an asymmetrical style on the sides of her to disrupt the symmetry a bit. At this point the goal isnโ€™t to make things look pretty & perfect; instead, itโ€™s just about searching & exploring for the look that I want! I chat more about imperfect sketching in this monthโ€™s draw with me video โœจ Brush: Edge Control by Jingsketch

Refining the Sketch: I lowered the opacity of my rough gesture layer and now Iโ€™ve created a new layer on top to begin refining the sketch, using thinner lines for more precision. I love this step because itโ€™s almost like tracing on top of the rough sketch, while correcting things that look off and giving the sketch more form and shape :) Brush: Marker Multiply by Max Ulichney

Adding Shadow & Detail: On a multiply layer, Iโ€™ll use the Marker Multiply brush to shade some portions of hair to create shine. Iโ€™ll also use this layer to create some hard shapes of shadow to create contrast in the drawing. For hard shadow, Iโ€™ll usually look for areas around the drawing where it seems like a hair clump is resting on top of something, and then shade under it โ€” this helps create a 3-dimensional feel! โœจ

Little Highlights: For this step all I did was add some little highlights to the eyes! I like to make the eye highlights intersect the iris and the white part of the eye to give it a more natural look โœจ

Final Touches: For the final touches I merged everything onto one layer and then adjusted the overall color palette in Curves to be slightly red, which warms up the drawing since the gray palette looked kind of cold. Then I sharpened the drawing by 10%, and added some chromatic aberration! And DONE โœ๏ธโœจ

Now is when Iโ€™ll get started on the coloring process! ๐Ÿฅฐ The character usually wears a combination of blue and red, so Iโ€™ll be brainstorming how to use those shades โœจ I also want to add some golden illustrative stars around her to give her sort of a daydreamy look, weโ€™ll see how it goes ๐Ÿ˜Œ

I hope you guys are having a lovely day so far!! Iโ€™m about to head home and continue working on some editing stuff for the august studio vlog ๐Ÿฅฐ Stay safe & cozy everyone!๐Ÿ’›

Love,

Lydia ๐Ÿ’Œ

That makes sense! Thank you for the response!! ๐Ÿฅฐ

Aw thank you!! I havenโ€™t altered the settings of the brush, but it took me a while to get the hang of it too! ๐Ÿ’› A lot of it has to do with the angle of the canvas I think because the brush has a tapering setting which makes it thicker or thinner/sharper depending on the way your canvas is tilted on the screen I think. I like to set it to a small size for finer details in facial features and such, and make the brush bigger for shading large areas! It takes a little time to get used to it! Haha ๐Ÿฅฐ

Did you alter a lot of the settings on the marker multiply brush? Iโ€™ve been trying to sketch with it and just not loving the look.. Your sketches always have so much depth and detail! ๐Ÿ˜Š

MintyCoast

Hehe thank you so much Shauntay!! ๐Ÿ’› And yes thatโ€™s so true! Any hair color thatโ€™s in the spectrum of blonde, auburn, or red is challenging for me for some reason! ๐Ÿ™ˆ but Iโ€™m trying to get more comfortable using it! ๐Ÿฅฐ

Lydia Elaine

Aww thanks Genesis!! ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ’›

Lydia Elaine

Thank you so much Kimberley!! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿฅฐ

Lydia Elaine

Aww!! Iโ€™m so happy you enjoy the brush! ๐Ÿ˜ it totally changed my sketching process when I started using it and I love it!! ๐Ÿ’›

Lydia Elaine

Omg!! ๐Ÿ™ˆ๐Ÿ’› It does take some time to get used to it! I remember struggling with it at first ๐Ÿฅฒ I think it helps to make the brush either really thin for details or really thick for shading, the medium size range for the brush looks pretty sloppy whenever I use it! ๐Ÿ™ˆ

Lydia Elaine

Love this! I WISH I could get the same performance from the marker brush as you. Every time I use it, it looks like a kindergartner hopped up on sugar colored/shaded my drawing. ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

THANKS TO YOU I use for my sketches the edge control brush by jingsketch everytime. I love it so much!!! ๐Ÿงก

Love to see your process of this! She looks so cute ๐Ÿ˜

Kimberley

I love your sketches, they are so messy but so appealingโœจ๐Ÿ’–

Awh thanks Lilz! ๐Ÿฅฐ and she doesnโ€™t have a name yet!! But Iโ€™m currently trying to think of one! ๐Ÿ™ˆ๐Ÿ’ญ

Lydia Elaine

Omg she's adorable ๐Ÿ˜ and she has red hair, which I remember you saying you don't do very often!! She's so precious I love this!!! โค

i love her!! ๐Ÿฅบ this drawing give me a lot of inspiration ๐ŸŒผ๐ŸŒฟ

Ah she is adorable! Does she have a name yet? ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ’“
